There are few more beautiful and historic forests in South Africa than the Pirie Forest just 22km from King William's Town. Visit Sandile's Cave where a Chief with a deformed leg eluded intensive sweeps of the forest by the forces of Thesiger later Lord Chelmsford during the 9 th Frontier War
Day1:
We go on a long walk up to Sandile's Cave high in the mountain forest where amazing views can be enjoyed. For the fit and brave we can explore the recesses of this cave where Sandile eluded capture. Listen to tales of the wars fought in this vicinity before we head back down to the scenic dam below.
Giant yellowwood trees were felled from this forest to provide timber for the construction of forts in the district as well as in the Kimberly diamond fields. This was where the Giant Golden Mole, endemic to this region, was first discovered. This is an ideal tour for school groups for which a special rate will be charged.
