The Thunga Thunga Route provides guests with an opportunity to experience rural tourism in what is home to the Xhosa people. It is also an exciting way of exploring the area between the Garden Route and Durban. Thunga Thunga has several meanings including to weave or to go on a winding route to many places or a home with many rooms. Woven into this route you will experience the rich tapestry, which is South Africa.
Day1:
Starting at Port Elizabeth, we visit Addo Elephant Park and Salem, an 1820 settler village, before savouring the rich history of Grahamstown.
Overnight: Grahamstown
Day2:
Today we cross the Fish River into 'Xhosaland' to visit Fort Hare University and Lovedale, two important centers of learning, which played such a significant role in our country's history.
Overnight: Fort Beaufort/Alice
Day3:
We travel up a scenic valley where waterfalls plunge from the heights and then descend into the valley where we meet and interact with a Xhosa family and walk through the forest.
Overnight: Xhosa Homestead
Day4:
Today we visit Mgwali where we learn more of the rich Xhosa culture and hear of a remarkable African missionary that established a mission here. We spend the night in a private game reserve.
Overnight: Matola Private Game Reserve.
Day5:
We travel to King William's Town where we visit the Amathole Museum, the Xhosa Gallery and Liberation Hero Steve Biko's Grave before traveling on to East London where the tour ends.
